Day 5: Gangtok Hike

Today was a beautiful day! It was sunny and warm and absolutely perfect for our main activity: a hike! We set out at 9am and walked uphill for at least an hour. Along the way we could see the Himalayas, specifically Kanchenjunga (the third highest mountain in the world!). The views were stunning. We then began our descent and hiked another few hours to Rabindranath Tagore's house. Tagore is a Nobel Prize winning poet from Bangladesh who also wrote the Indian national anthem. We took a shortcut down the mountainside and hopped into our taxis, which took us to Rangpo. We had lunch there (including amazing samosas that were perfectly flaky and delectably spicy) then rode the rest of the way to Rhenock House in Gangtok--our abode until Monday.

Once settled in to our rooms, we gathered around a fire they had started outside. It was really fun being with the whole group in such a cozy setting; we had definitely grown closer during the walk and through this trip in general. After awhile, dinner was served at the hotel, and bedtime followed soon thereafter!
